Freestanding cookers are cookers that can be placed anywhere where there is floor space. They normally consist of an oven space, hob section on top of the oven and sometimes a grill at the top (or in the oven). They are sturdy and can be either gas or electric. There are many advantages of freestanding cookers compared to a wall unit cooker. For one, they are more versatile. You can have all your cooking needs in one single unit whereas it can be difficult to get a hob on top of a wall unit cooker. The second advantage is that they are flexible with where you can put them. As long as you have a cooker that can fit on the floor space then you do not have to worry about anything else. Lastly, they can be replaced easily. If your wall unit cooker breaks then trying to find another one that exactly fits into the space can be difficult but with a free standing cooker you can easily find one that will fit. This comes as a great advantage if you buy second hand cookers.

If you plan to buy from a range of second hand freestanding cookers there are some checks that you can do prior to purchase to make sure that you are buying a cooker that works. For a gas cooker, make sure that when the gas is turned on the ignition spark works and easily lights the gas. Ignition switches are often the first thing to go on a gas cooker so it is a good sign if they work. For an electric switch, make sure all the components work and that the dials are in good order. All second hand ovens should be cleaned before selling but check that they have done this without damaging the wall of the oven or the components of the cooker.
